Good puzzle design

What are some best practices for creating puzzles for an RPG group that both rely on the character's skillsets whilst also not just being solved by a die roll?

This would be helpful! At times I work on original puzzles but at times I need to rely on modules I have read.

This only becomes a problem because all of my players are also DMs, all with 5-25+ years of experience playing DnD, and two that VORACIOUSLY devour content for their own games. It's come up several times that these players said in game they felt they could not participate in a puzzle bc they had metagame knowledge and felt they should not be allowed to solve it.

Having quirkier puzzles, or tips and tricks to go about creating them in ways that are not quite so time consuming. Perhaps I (and others in similar situations) will be able to create more content for players in a more efficient, creative way!
