How to use prebuilt modules in a custom world.

I've started to run a campaign in a world of my own design but I wanted to use prebuilt modules and campaigns to help fill-out the world. However I've had trouble with balancing the games when I switch around the creatures in some of the encounters.

How important are the rules? Tweak, add, omit.

I once read in one edition’s handbook that the rules aren’t meant to be final. But, exactly how much can we add to, tweak, and omit rules? I find myself doing this all the time. In fact, the complexity of the rules can get so overwhelming ffor...

How neutral should the DM be?

In #64 "On Being A Good Player" you offhand mention a DM Neutrality Principle, and suggest that might make for a video topic. How neutral should a DM really be? Are they obligated to be a balancing force, and how often should they put their thumb...

how to create adventure hooks

Ways to introduce content you've prepared for the session into the flow of what your players are doing without it feeling forced/repetitive. Tips on leaving clues in one adventure that will help tie it to or lead into the next would also be great.

A video about TH White’s ‘The Sword in the Stone’

Hi Matt, I’m currently in the middle of reading TH White’s ‘The Once and Future King’ series, and I’m really enjoying it. You quote and mention ‘The Sword in the Stone’ a lot in your videos but haven’t yet done a dedicated video...

Named vs. Unnamed NPCs

In your video "On Being A Good Player" you mention taking notes on any proper nouns. I have always struggled with presenting this to my players in the past because a lot of them expect the shopkeeper to have a name and some sort of story and I've...

Dragonborn accent etc.

Honestly, I just enjoy listening to it and need an excuse for you to spend most of a video speaking in it. Was it just a natural question for you to consider whether and how the Dragonborn would speak differently? Have you created any other...

How to Marvelize Your Campaign

There's this idea of the 'Marvel problem'; the hero and the villain have similar powers and strengths, so the conflict comes down to whoever does the gimmick better. Usually, the villain has some added gimmick which signals that they are in some...

Psionics

The Will and the Way! Psionics are an often controversial for their inclusion in d&d and how they only belong in scifi settings with rayguns, robots, and crashed spaceships. However the Darksun setting used them to great fanfare and they have...

Speaking exercises and how to project your voice while GMing without losing your voice. Every time I run a game I lose my voice even though I drink lots of water.

How to handle Area of Effects in 3D encounters

Your video on Range and Altitude in 3D did not cover how Area of Effect spells (Fireball or Cloudkill) work in a non-euclidean environment or in three dimensions. i.e. What happens when I cast Fireball 10 ft above an enemy?

An MMORPG can release a patch or xpac and then buff or nerf classes to balance the game. 5e really can’t. So... Is it important to look especially at spells as a DM and allow or not allow certain things that might be op?

How and when to run Mass Combat

Armies are on the rise. Nations, city-states, and monster hordes have been allowed to congregate and build during a great time of peace. That icon of peace is dead. It's time for war.

Are you currently / will you be working on Fighter?

Matt, I really enjoyed your first two Ratcatchers books. I just wanted to know if you have any sort of plan for when and if we can expect the 3rd one. I take it you have a bunch of stuff to do with the new office and Strongholds and Followers first.
